You know, it got me thinking...how many tapes (the medium I did most of "this" with) do I have from an LP that someone bought that I borrowed to tape during the 70s and 80s? NONE.

My collection consists entirely of stuff I bought, and all the tapes and even CDs (that have "mixes" from friends) that are of material bought by someone else are all used for a few yrs of listening and then discarded (generally cause they were cheap materials, didn't have all the fancy pants store bought holders, inserts, etc.).

So, not that I am defending it, but for me, this sort of "sharing" was never really about avoiding the cost as much as "sampling"...my own collection is made up entirely of what I bought, OR, in the past few yrs, I have accumulated via DLs (though none of those have been commercial releases to my knowledge).
